Intel spills more Lynnfield details

Core i7 8xx and Core i5 7xx series

There will be two very different variants of Core i7 processors available: the LGA 1156 and LGA 1366 versions. The dual-channel, LGA 1156 processor will have the Core i7 name with 800 series model number and will have also 4 cores and HyperThreading, for a total of up to 8 threads. Turbo mode for these CPUs will be very enhanced, up to four 133MHz speed bins will be possible - this translates to 3.6GHz when using the 2.93GHz Core i7 870 model.

To keep it simple:

  • Core i7 870 - 2.93GHz, 4 cores, 8 threads, 95W
  • Core i7 860 - 2.8GHz, 4/8, 95W
  • Core i5 750 - 2.66GHz, 4/4, 95W
  • Core i3 ??? - ??? - 2/4, ??W

The Core i5 will also come for LGA 1156 platforms, as will the Core i3, a dual core chip with HT.

I haven't seen such a confusing branding in a long time. Intel seems to want to position the i3 above the Core 2 Duo, hence naming it "i3" and the Core i5 above the Core 2 Quad. Using two very different processors with the Core i7 branding will be confusing for the uninformed buyer but does account for some expected similarity in performance.
