Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.
Microsoft and the other industry giants that support HD-DVD still haven't pronounced, but this was an expected finale, since some major retailers stated they were phasing out sales of HD-DVD discs and players. Samsung had also made a similar statement, in which they claimed they would decrease the little focus they had in HD-DVD.
The only event that seems capable of saving HD-DVD is a major push in computer drives at good prices - something extremely unlikely right now. The market penetration that the PS3 provided for Blu-Ray was of extreme importance for this unfolding of events.
Similar announcements are expected to follow from other HD-DVD supporters.
