While this year's CES hasn't been what I hoped for, some interesting stuff has popped up, like more info on the new USB 3.0 spec.
The Register has the insight and provides pictures of the prototypes.
The new standard will provide compatibility with earlier USB versions, while it adds the ability to transfer data at speeds of around 4.7Gbps. This is achieved by the use of five extra pins, while the old ones are still available in the same place. What changes is the new sockets and plugs are a bit longer and are using the edge of the middle connector to provide the extra pins.
The longer socket will not affect how the old plugs will fit in and a mini socket will also be available.
Very clever and practical engineering, I must add.
The final USB 3.0 specification is expected to be completed by June.
