At the recent AMD Analyst day, Rick Bergman, who is senior vice president and general manager of AMD graphics products group, revealed that there are no plans to release the R700 in 2008.
Well, this ain't good for them. What they are saying is the only thing they will have as the top performing card is the R680, commonly known as the HD 3870X2. Two of those put together give you four RV670 and a huge amount of framerate, but that's about it. And that is considering that the driver works well enough for the Crossfire mumbo jumbo to really deliver close to twice the performance of a single HD3870X2.
Nvidia will also be answering them with a dual G92 card, so they won't capitalize on the performance of the card like they would with no direct competior.
If Nvidia ends up launching the G100 in 2008 and it is a very improved chip, like the G80 was, AMD will be caught pants down like they did with all those delays of the R600.
You just can't hope for a good year when you don't have any backup plan in case the original fails and I don't think that Fusion will save them, though it may be important for AMD in a whole. More about that later.
It seems that the time being spent developing Fusion is starting to take it's toll.
