I have some good news for all Windows XP users out there:
If you were considering to finally migrate to the new Microsoft OS, think again. Testers of the latest preview of SP3 for XP have witnessed a 10% performance improvement in Office suit tests. So on top of finally getting DirectX 10 support, XP users will also get a performance boost. It's Office suit tests, who cares? You may think that but it hints that, while not so big performance gains, some gains could be expected for most of the software running in XP and that's a good thing on such an aging OS. That is something Vista SP1 testers are yet to witness.
Microsoft usually likes to restrict the functionality of older operating systems by not allowing you to run some new MS software, but the reactions to Vista have been so bad that it seems they don't even care anymore.
And this is the way IT SHOULD BE. You should get continuous improvements to the OS without having to pay more for it, or being forced to buy and use something that's clearly worse.
Finally they did something right, congrats Steve! You may end up being fired, but we're happy with what's going on.
Eventually they may end up not suppling you with their latest version of MSN Messenger or Windows Media Player but, for now, all is great with Windows XP.
The final release of Service Pack 3 is expected in the first half of 2008.
