Intel partners with Google for Chrome OS

Well, duh. How good for them. What was the other option, really?

As TGDaily reports:
He said: "We have been privy to the project for some time and we have worked with Google on a variety of projects, including this one. We welcome Google's move here."

The statement is likely to throw Microsoft into total panic. Intel and Microsoft were always "friends", but some have speculated they've always been enemies.

Well, Microsoft has publicly stated that it only wants people to use netbooks with a three app limit or Windows XP - either way you're screwed - and although they have taken some steps back about the three app limit, they have still not comitted to a netbook targeted OS with a smaller footprint.
Given this and that Google is the ruler of the web right now, it was either partnering with Google or leaving it all for ARM to pick up. "Google OS" will be Linux based and Intel has been supporting the platform very well for a while now - this is, then, a rather simple next step for them.

While the WIntel platform has been a good strategy for a good while, Microsoft isn't really in a very strong position right now. Vista was an enormous setback and is completely unfit for netbooks - Intel knows this. The market is changing as the web continues to evolve and Intel is riding the wave together with Google.
It will be fascinating to see how the OS' wars will unroll from now on since, while traditional GNU/Linux distributions have shown strength recently, Google is a company with the power to really shake up the market.
