AMD delivered another pearl for enthusiasts, now at $100.
An enthusiast from the Xtreme Systems forum has managed to overclock and unlock it's Phenom II X2 550 to considerable heights: 4GHz and four cores.
The motherboard used was a DFI JR 790GX-M3H5 although Gigabyte's 790FXT-UD5P has also been reported as a successful one. In the GigaByte board ACC must be set as "Hybrid", while in the DFI setting it to AUTO was enough. Other motherboards like the excellent Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P also supports this feature.
With the unlocking process complete, it is recommended to use, at least, Prime 95 on the four CPUs and some Super Pi and 3D Mark runs to ensure stability.
The unlocking process will also disable the embedded thermal diodes, so you will have to use the motherboard sensor, if present, to monitor temperatures.
Update: You can now also choose to unlock only one of the disabled cores with some ASUS motherboards. Statistics of successful unlocks inside.

Overclocking
17.50 = v1.300 = 3.51MHz
18.00 = v1.325 = 3.61MHz
18.50 = v1.375 = 3.71MHz
work parfect
Nice results, is that with stock cooling and with which motherboard?

Thanks for sharing the details . Any core unlocking?
Do share more @ siliconmadness.net/forums, like memory used, timings, performance, etc. Whatever you feel like it.
Best regards
Hi, I have the same CPU and mobo but can only get 3 cores. The odd thing is that with the 'Family 10h setting (left on Auto normally) I can select 0,1,3 or 0,1,4 and both work fine suggesting all four cores are good to go. I have upped the 'CPU VID Special Add' to give 1.4 and the CPU-NB to 1.35 but still can't get all four. Any ideas? and what voltages did you have to set to get all four?
Thanks
Hi Geoff,
Perhaps some bug with the BIOS that is causing it only to select the same 3rd core. Can you check that by overclocking the core individually with ACC, if the top clock for both "3rd" core is the same?
Best regards
I have gone back from D7JDA09 (2009-10-09) to D7JD727A (2009-07-27) which now gives me the normal 'Single, Dual, Tri, Quad' options. Unfortunately still no joy. There is another earlier BIOS available from 2009-04-24 which I will try as this is probably the one you had when you wrote this article. Do you recall if you had to change the Family 10h setting from Auto to Quad? If you still have this setup I would appreciate your voltages and GenieBios settings. I am not looking to overclock (much) but just want the cores unlocked.
Thanks again
Geoff
Unfortunately, I don't have access to the hardware.
Try to see if I'm right about it always choosing the same core by using overclocking. If I am, maybe you can reach ASUS on the matter. I'm suggesting overclocking individual cores merely on for diagnostic purposes.
