The Xbox 360 has had it's fair share of problems, mainly the dreaded RRoD. That's not all, lots and lots of pads come with D-Pad problems. Here's a quick fix for whoever is suffering from it.
Well, not everything is lost tough, if you're fond of some DIY, here's something to fix your current controllers - they are not doomed.
The main problem seems to be that Microsoft decided to put the same D-Pad on a smaller "hole" - was 27mm in the Controller-S and 25mm in the current XBox 360 Pad. This way, it gets frequently stuck, especially in newer models, the one with the grey bottom part, not the grey metallic one. At least for me, the old works mostly fine.
The Fix
So... What can we do? This gentleman sugests sanding and I agree with him. Make the "hole" larger and the problem will go away. Easy, isn't it? It takes some work but it's quite simple.
I have a "Xenon" wireless pad, which works like a charm; bought a black one the other day, useless to say: it is far worse. Cost cutting at Redmond, it seems, starting by Q.A.
You also might have problems when pressing left, if you do, do the second fix. This one involves cutting a small plastic part so everything will work fine. This second problem isn't all that common, so use with descretion.
Happy modding
