XFX will be releasing a new line of GeForce 8 cards, namely 8800GT and 8800GS cards, which feature a custom PCB, a new cooler and the traditional XFX mate black with green DVI ports.
The first card to receive the new board was the 8800GS but XFX has now extended it to some 8800GT models. This is a good move, in part: the newer PCB features a rework PWM module, which doesn't require active cooling, and features better quality inductors. The end result is the that card's three phase PWM is able to cope better with power requirements, than the stock part, and produces less electrical noise while in load. Although still present, it is considerably less and is not as a high pitched sound, something that can be irritating in some situations.
That was the good part, the bad one is that the new cooler does it's job well but is of a rather simple, economical, design paired with a very loud fan.
I'll publish temperature results soon, but I can tell you that you won't want this little vacuum cleaner around. It's one of the loudest coolers around and - from subjective hearing - louder than a stock 7900GT or 7600GT.
The stock cooler with the big fan is far better and would fit the requirements of a Media Center PC.
So that no compromises are made, XFX has also released an 8800GT card with a Zalman cooler. The card features a 640MHz core clock, 1900MHz for the RAM and 1600MHz for the shaders, but one with stock clocks is also available.
These two cards will only be available in the US, Latin America and Asia.
Pricing was not available at publishing time.
