While not completely clear at the time of the announcement of the new product from the Cupertino camp, the battery of the Macbook Air will not be trivially replaceable. While it isn't soldered, most users will need help doing it.
Apple will have a battery replacement, similar to what it did for the iPhone, that will cost $129 and take five business days by mail. Owners can also go to an Apple store to have it replaced.
It is still not clear what you will pay, if you're able to buy one from Apple, to replace it yourself.
While I reckon some compromise had to be made for the concept to come to life, and while it does make more sense they had to do this for the Macbook Air than for the iPhone, it still is far from ideal.
When will this kind of behavior from tech companies reach a boiling point?
Mind you, it's not just Macs, you have computer motherboards and HDDs also, as two examples. You can't repair them yourself or pay a technician to repair it, because they don't provide you with schematics of the circuits.
If you would buy something like a TV from Philips, they do provide you with all the schematics of the TV circuits so you can have someone repair it for you. The obvious is most companies that do provide you with the schematics are the one's whose devices don't break that easily.
Obviously motherboards are cheaper to repair than TVs and sometimes you're better just buying new stuff, but that means most of the time it's not just a new motherboard that you have to buy, when you could've completely avoid it. Manufacturers usually don't even provide repair services out of warranty, even if you want to pay for them.
As always if you completely disagree with this kind of behavior, what you can do is to don't buy the product. Most of the time, it's the only action left.
