Core 2 Duo E8200, E8400 and E8500 review

Xbitlabs has got the review on these new CPUs, codenamed Wolfdale.
They aren't any major breakthrough, without SSE4.1 at play Core 2 owners won't have much to gain from an upgrade. The overclocking may help, 4.3GHz is nothing to snuff at, but Core 2 E6000+ series owners will be better off going Quad or waiting for Nehalem or K10,5.
Neither the 6MB L2 cache nor the fast divider provide performance improvements much beyond 10%, often less. The SSE4.1 packs a lot of power, bringing more than 100% improvement in some situations.
The power consumption measurements are very good, so these CPUs are excellent for HTPC use.
Good improvements, but overall not impressive, neither is the expected pricing:
  • Core 2 Duo E8500 - $266
  • Core 2 Duo E8400 - $183
  • Core 2 Duo E8200 - $163
  • Core 2 Duo E8190 - $163
Reasonable, giving the lack of competition, but I would love to see them at $200 and below, bringing the Quads a bit down also. The E8190 is an E8200 without virtualization.
