Graphics Cards

ATi Radeon HD 3870X2 reviewed, again

This time by Anandtech, after the new driver was released.
No CrossfireX yet, or Quad-Crossfire, as I like to call it, that has to wait until March.
What I said recently about the card holds true, with the following fixes:
• Company of Heroes DX10 – AA now working on R680. Up to 70% faster at 2560x1600 4xAA
• Crysis DX10 – Improves up to ~60% on R680 and up to ~9% on RV670 on Island GPU test up to 1920x1200.
• Lost Planet DX10 – 16xAF scores on R680 improved ~20% and more. AF scores were horribly low before and should have been very close to no AF scores
• Oblivion – fixed random texture flashing
• COJ – no longer randomly goes to blackscreen after the DX10 benchmark run
• World in Conflict - 2560x1600x32 0xAA 16xAF quality=high we get 77% increase
• Fixed random WIC random crashing to desktop
• Fixed CF scaling for Colin McRae Dirt, Tiger Woods 08, and Blazing Angels2
• Fixed WIC DX9 having smearable text

Be sure to add worrisome power consumption figures, that might put some people away, rightly so.
It's a shame that Anand went to the trouble of also benchmarking an 8800GT SLI and forgot to add it to the power consumption figures, although at 110W more than a single 8800GT, the green pair will probably come out swinging(courtesy of XbitLabs).
Also, the memory for the stock card is now at 1800MHz, not quite what was reported sooner, but a smart move since it allows for more competitive pricing, without hurting too much.

The price/performance ratio can be argued about and depends on your current motherboard, but it is the most high-performance you get with a single x16 slot.
This considered, the 8800GTS 512MB is only an option if:
  • you don't want to spend $450(add some more for a new PSU) and settle for less
  • there's green blood in your veins
  • you're a penguin
All things considered, ATi did a wonderful job, with which it managed to come out on top. It's a reminder of the X1900XTX launch days.
