Toshiba has announced that, in March 2008, it will start selling a new type of battery called the Super Charge ion Battery. The key feature of this new type of battery is the ability to be charged to 90% of full capacity in just five minutes. Toshiba also claims it's a very safe battery, so no exploding with this one.
The new battery will be used in multiple applications by Toshiba but, unfortunately, laptops aren't among them. A shame since it is also supposed to last for 10 years, something where laptop batteries never excelled - they like to lose much of it's capacity after the first year.
The first production will be targeted only at industrial use, with no plans disclosed for CE approved products that could be used in laptops.
