The DVD Forum has finally approved the final specifications for triple layer read only HD-DVD discs which can now hold 51GB, surpassing the largest Blu-Ray disc available by 1GB.
If cost is lower than a dual-layer DB-ROM, this will help in the the format war, Blu-Ray lost the capacity advantage it had for a long time.
No comments were made available of compatibility with the first players launched, but they should be able to play these discs, as the HD-DVD specification was thought out to include triple layer discs since the beginning. 17GB per layer also doesn't seem an issue in that matter.
Squeezing in the extra 2GB per layer was a result of a little decrease of the size of the recording pit and DVD Forum claims that it also increased the readability of the discs.
