AMD Phenom II X6 Overclocking Record
In another testament to how well AMD's 45nm process has matured, a new record has been set on the Phenom II X6 1090T: 6.7GHz with the help of sub-zero cooling.
Such a high clock is rivaling what is achievable with Intel's new "Gulftown" 32nm Core i7 980X, which currently hovers anywhere from 6.4 to 6.6GHz with the same help from sub-zero cooling.

This is, of course, a suicide shot. An overclock capable of running a round of Pi calculations, like Super Pi, needs more conservative clocks of around 6.5GHz.
Compared with Intel's new 32nm process, AMD shows that it currently has the ability to keep up with clockspeed even while running a process node behind, something we have also witnessed in the top processors from both companies.
AMD has kept behind on the performance and manufacturing cost front for a while and is expected to keep so until 2011. AMD's "Bulldozer" architecture is expected to deliver performance per clock improvements but the cost and process shrink competitiveness is still largely an unknown.
