A million of AMD based Eee PCs?
My colleagues at XbitLabs are reporting that Asus has placed an order of one million AMD processors, in this case Semprons, allegedly for use in devices of the Eee line. That doesn't mean that they will be used in a next Eee PC model though.
According to rumors, Asus has in the works a full line of Eee branded devices like an Eee Desktop, an HDTV and an All-in-One computer, similar to the iMac or the Gateway One. The strongest rumors point towards an Eee Desktop showing up soon.
Looking at AMD's current Sempron lineup, there is one model that is of special interest to mobile applications: the 2100+ model for the socket S1, which has a TDP of just 9W.
This would be a very good addition to the Eee lineup as it would be a considerable upgrade from the Intel processor used in the 701 Eee - it's 1GHz clockspeed and integrated memory controller would make for a decent UMPC. If they indeed are going to be used in a mobile device, the rumored Eee PC with a bigger screen is where I point it at.
The other current lineup of Semprons is also rather good when it comes to power consumption; the new base model, the LE-1150, runs at 2GHz and chews up 45W, costing just $37 - a very good candidate for a Eee Desktop.
