ATI Radeon HD3690 256MB - 9600GT's nemesis?

Not quite, in fact, it's far from it.
Previous reports of the 9600GT going head to head with the HD3850 are, in fact, correct. This one serves merely to fill some holes.

Itocp managed to capture a picture of a new graphics card from ATi which is nothing more than a castrated HD3850, even the clock remains at 670MHz for the core and 1660MHz for the RAM, which goes down to 128bits width, from 256. Memory size is expect to be 256MB, while a 512MB variant is unlikely. Besides the added amount of memory, the density per memory chip needed would make the card even more expensive than what's desired.

If the pricing is right though, it will still be a very appealing card, since inherits the 320 shaders and 16 ROPs from the HD3850, but don't expect to game on very high resolutions.
On paper it looks like a more sensible option than the HD3600 series, in all fronts. The price hasn't been confirmed but sub-$150 is very likely, leaning towards $130.

Benchmarks should follow, as soon as NDAs allow it.
