At launch, the card got some good reviews but was held back by it's limited RAM speed of 1.8GHz, especially considering it's bumped up core speed of 825MHz.
ATI partners are now considering offering premium HD 3870X2s with GDDR4, making them the fastest cards around. Some 3870s are able to have their ram pushed up to 2.4GHz while overclocking so, if the X2 comes close to that, the performance will improve considerably. Of more importance would be the Quad-crossfire support, but that is still MIA.
This move will put some pressure on Nvidia and it's 9800GX2 which won't be able to have conservative clocks, if Nvidia wants to regain the single-card performance prize. The release date for the green counterpart is still not given as certain but it is pointed to be February 21st.
